June 24 - Independence, Kearsarge, and Glen

I left Bishop on the Eastern Sierra Transit bus at 7:00 am headed for Independence where I needed to pick up my resupply box. Since the post office didn't open until 9:30 I hung out at the only business open, Subway. The people working were real nice and gave me a free cup of coffee. Once I had my box sorted out and mostly packed into my bear canister I hitched a ride. Ed and Susan picked me up within 30 seconds of starting to hitch and drove me right to the start of the trail. Next was the five mile walk back up Kearsarge Pass followed by six more miles into the Glen Pass drainage. Along the way I met Sugar, a 67 year old adventurer from Japan. Since he retired last year he's biked the Andes mountains through Peru, Bolivia, Patagonia, and Chile, and now he is walking the PCT. after 36 years of only one week off his job he says he's ready to explore the world. This is his first visit to the USA.
