July 19 - Echo Lake to the Desolation Wilderness

Betsy dropped me off at the trail parking area at Echo Lake and I rejoined the PCT. The trail follows the shoreline passing above some incredible homes on national forest land. I can't say they were cabins, because they weren't! Some were stunning. All needed a water taxi or boat to access, unless the owners wanted to walk. Not likely.

The trail gently climbed past several lakes. There were lots of older adults and high school aged kids walking up the trail. I met only one other PCT hiker, but lots of local hikers. The trail topped out at 9400 feet on Dick's Pass then dropped almost 1000 feet to Dick's Lake where I camped.

Echo Lake Store.

The trail starts out on the jetty, then crosses a dam, and finally goes along the rocky shore.

Cabins below.

Beautiful lake with islands. Desolation Wilderness is called 'The Second Yosemite' for views like this.
